Top 10 tricks to help you beat procrastination

Why do we procrastinate?

Why do we procrastinate?Procrastination has many causes. Wider reading suggests some experts disagree on the most common causes of procrastination and how to overcome it. We have a few hacks we have tried ourselves, which might just help you stop procrastinating.

Overwhelm: Some people procrastinate because they feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. If you feel overwhelmed try breaking a big problem down in to smaller parts. You will often find what seems like a big problem on the surface is actually a series of small, totally solve-able problems.

Information overload: There is no limit to the volume of information you can find on most topics now. I would suggest that before you start your research you make a list of what you need to know specifically, so you can ignore the rest. List all possible sources next to each piece of information and people who might be able to help you.

Perfectionism: There is nothing wrong with doing a good job but perfectionism is a whole other problem. Write a list of all the things you would like to achieve from your project. Next to each of these write an ‘S’ for salient or an ‘N’ for non-salient attributes. Salient attributes are those factors that could make or break the success of a project. Non-salient factors are those that would be nice to have but will not largely determine a project’s success. Work to achieve salient factors first and then non-salient factors. Be careful not to delay a project too long just to include a non-salient attribute.

Lack of organizational skills: You cannot be everything to everyone. You need to decide what’s important and keep track of your tasks and your time. Buy a diary and keep it up to date, so you can stay on top of your work and know what you need to do next.

Last minute adrenaline rush: Sometimes a deadline in the distant future is not enough to prompt you into action, however, a last minute rush to meet an urgent deadline can increase your sense of accomplishment. There is a danger of course that you won’t actually get finished or your work quality will be poor. So, work out how you could increase your sense of accomplishment by finishing your work early. Perhaps you will aim to achieve a higher mark or grade by doing a better job or you could offer yourself a small personal reward, like giving yourself a night out, for finishing your project ahead of time.
